Working hard for something we don’t care about is called stress; working hard for something we love is called passion.

Simon Sinek

Are you living with passion? Or stress? Passion and stress are completely opposite of each other. Stress is from the head and is caused by doing something we have been told will make us happy, everyone else is doing it and doing it just to survive. Passion is from the heart; it’s doing something that makes you come alive, feels good, it’s extremely interesting to you and makes your heart sing. We all have something inside us that is our passion.

Caution: sometimes what we think is passion is from our heads, and we do it for reasons other than the love of being able to do it.  The best example I can give of this is that I became a real estate investor years ago, because I was drawn to the money—not what I got to do as a real estate investor. I have no passion for managing and being involved with real estate. None. Not like writing this article—I love every second of writing it. I will have a question for you at the end of this article to help you know the difference.

The best way to describe passion is that it feels like you’re being drawn to it like a magnet. I used to watch a lot of sports, especially football. I still do enjoy playoff football. I believe one of the reasons I enjoy sports is to see players playing with passion, to know how hard they had to work to be doing what they love and to see the occasional underdog win. Maybe that’s why sports are so popular, we love watching what we know is inside of us—passion.

I remember when I worked at a job that I was grateful for, but had no passion for, how incredibly slow time went by. Five minutes felt like an hour, an hour felt like eight, eight hours felt like a month, and the last fifteen minutes of work time stopped completely. I always stared out the window and wished I was not at work; the best way to describe this feeling is that I felt like I was in a jail. This is how life is when working at something that you have no passion for.

Now I have the complete opposite; time goes by so quickly when I’m doing what I love. Do you remember when you were young and played sports, were in a play, outside playing, playing house, playing a board game, and you lost track of time and were in the now? That’s living with passion! Musicians and artists have found their hearts desire, and when they do it they have passion and come alive. They don’t do it for money. Money is a byproduct. They do it because they Love to do it.

If you won a billion dollars, would you do what you’re doing or going to do? Yes—you found your passion. No—keep looking, and you’ll find something inside of you that’s not for sale.

Your work is going to fill a large part of your life, and the only way to be truly satisfied is to do what you believe is great work. And the only way to do great work is to love what you do.If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.”
