 I have a great daily habit of walking in nature with my dog Annie. One particular day I thought about a time when I didn’t notice the beauty around me. I didn’t notice sunrises and sunsets, birds, trees, and leaves and animals.  Another way to say this is that I sorta saw everything, but I had so much going on upstairs that I didn’t see or notice the beauty in the world.

Now my life is a completely different story, because I Love seeing everything in this beautiful world. It’s amazing to see a beautiful sunrise or sunset, hear the birds, see all the amazing animals on this planet, and how the leaves change. The most amazing thing to me is how much everything changes in a twenty-four hour cycle. When you think about it, it is truly remarkable how everything before us changes in such a short period of time. No two sunsets are the same.

The main reason I began actually enjoying the beauty in the world is that I committed to making walking in nature a habit. I made a choice that I wanted this gift of the beauty of nature in my life and I was worth having it! So I decided on a time that I would do this every day without fail. Very few excuses are valid to not do this daily. And this was before I had my dog Annie, so I didn’t have to do it. I was committed.


The first month or so of doing this, I had to listen to a lot of stories running through my mind: This is stupid…I could be doing other things. I didn’t really enjoy the walk, because my mind was working overtime. I wasn’t in the now actually enjoying nature…enjoying the experience. After doing this for a little bit—creating the habit—my mind really quieted down, and I started to really enjoy these nature walks. This is now a great empowering habit that I do almost every day of my life.

There are two things I want you to take away from this article. The first is the awesome benefits of walking in nature, and the second is how important it is to create empowering habits.

I have no idea how it happens—what occurs at a cellular level—but I know nature can heal you and help to quiet thoughts and to ground you in the now. When you take these nature walks, you receive a bonus of the privilege to marvel at the beauty of the world and simply take it in.

The very first thing you need to know in creating a new habit is that you are worth having it. Are you worth having an empowering habit? Don’t brush over that question; there’s power in knowing the answer. Get quiet and see what you come up with. If you find out you think you’re not worthy; that’s great info to have. Realize that’s just a story and a lie someone told you along your journey.

 To create an empowering habit, realize you will be using time to practice the habit. So you will have to give up something to take its place, and the best thing to give up is a habit that is disempowering you from being the person you came here to be.

Also know that the first month or so probably won’t be fun, because it’s not in your subconscious and not yet a firmly established habit. Think of anything new you started—like exercising—it probably was not much fun until it became a habit.

Use your conscious mind to help jar your memory as you work to create a new habit. Set alarm clocks, put sticky notes up, have stuff fall on you—whatever it takes to help you remember. And remember it takes about 90 days until it’s in your subconscious and a true habit.
